Today I wanted to share with you a quote from Harper Lee’s novel Go set a watchman. As I mentioned in my review of the novel, Lee’s quality of writing is far from disappointing in this book. Following is one of the many passages that struck a chord with me in this novel:
“As sure as time, history is repeating itself, and as sure as man is man, history is the last place he’ll look for his lessons.”
Go set a watchman by Harper Lee
This extract is, like many of Lee’s messages, timeless. We rarely look at the past to inform our present. If we did so more often, we would see the consequences of war, hatred and indifference but we could also see the results of love, compassion and understanding. As the very naive person I am, I wish we could all overcome our fears of the Other and learn from what has happened and is still happening around us.
